When do skates need sharpening?

  • You slide out on tight turns or stops.
  • The edge doesn't catch when you drag a fingernail across it.
  • There's a nick or burr after skating on rough ice or stepping on concrete.
  • It's been about 8-12 hours of ice time since your last sharpen.

Why Sparx

Our Sparx machine gives a precise, consistent edge every time, so your skates feel the same from one sharpen to the next. Prefer a hand sharpen? We do that too.

Questions

How long does it take?

Usually 10-15 minutes while you wait.

Do I need an appointment?

No. Stop in during store hours, Tuesday-Sunday 10am-6pm.

How often should I sharpen?

Most hockey players sharpen every 8-12 hours of ice time, or sooner if they start sliding out on turns. Figure skates usually need it less often.

Do new skates need sharpening?

Yes. Most new skates need a first sharpen before they hit the ice. That's $12 here.

What's the difference between Sparx and hand sharpening?

Both are done by our staff. Sparx is a machine that gives the same edge every time. Hand sharpening is the traditional way, on our shop sharpener.

Do used skates come sharpened?

No. Used skates are sold as-is. A sharpen is available as an add-on when you buy online.
